This Natural Easter egg Dye is definitely one for the bucket list this Easter and very easy to prepare using your Thermomix. Super fun times for the whole family. I love colouring Easter eggs and until recently I always used to buy these little food colouring tablets in my local supermarket. This year I decided to go a little more natural and try something different. I am so impressed with the results of Thermomix natural Easter egg dye and I can only recommend you try it for yourself. It is a great way to make use of leftover vegetables and scraps that you would have otherwise chucked away. There are so many colours you can make but I have listed my favourites and also included a method below for you. When you're done with the big Easter egg hunt, simply use up the leftover boiled eggs to make my tasty Egg molee.


Dyeing agents


    • 500 g red cabbage in small chunks. Place in the mixing bowl and chop 3 Sec. / Speed 5. Follow the instructions below.


    • 6 brown onions skin only. Tip: You can just collect onion skin from cooking for the next few days and then collect it in a jar to have enough for the day. Alternatively, halve the peeled onions and in loads of 2 chop in the mixing bowl 2 Sec. / Speed 7 and place in a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.


    • 2 Tbsp turmeric


    • 500 g beetroot peeled. Place in the mixing bowl and chop 3 Sec. / Speed 5. Follow the instructions below.

    Thermomix Natural Easter Egg Dye

    • natural vegetable dyeing agent see above options
    • 500 g water
    • 1 Tbsp cider vinegar
    • 1 strainer
    • 1 large jar Weck Jar or similar
    • coconut oil
    • 12-24 eggs


    1. Take the vegetable / spice of your choice and follow the above instructions for chopping them etc. and place it in the mixing bowl. Add the water and cider vinegar and cook 20 Min. / 100°C / Speed 1. Pass the liquid through a strainer into a large Weck jar and set aside.
    2. To boil the eggs, clean the mixing bowl. Add 1000g water to the mixing bowl and insert the simmering basket. Add 12 eggs at the same time and boil 20 Min. / Varoma / Speed 1. If you want to make 24 eggs, simply repeat this process. Strain under cold water and carefully lift each off into the dye. You can fill the Weck jar with as many eggs as you can but they need to be fully covered.
    3. The colour intensity is totally up to you and will change the longer you leave the eggs in the dye. The minimum is 30 minutes but you can leave them as long as overnight to get a more intense colour. Once dyed, remove with a spoon and lift onto an empty egg carton. Now you can rub them with some coconut oil to keep them shiny. Enjoy them fast!

      Exactly what I was looking for, thanks Sophia! Just a question, does the vinegar need to be cider, or would spirit vinegar be fine?

        Any type of light vinegar will work 🙂
